July Read & Write Night…

For our last summer Read and Write night of this year we have a couple of simple writing exercises, with time to listen to what results from your pens and keyboards.

When you have a writing problem it’s good to share with other writers who can not only sympathise but provide helpful suggestions, so we’ll be setting aside some time for this.

We can’t guarantee it will solve your writing problems but sometimes just talking about the issue helps…

Our regular meetings schedule resumes in September…

June Read & Write Night…

As the June Read & Write night date also happens to be #National Writing Day we’ll be joining in at Wednesday’s session.

We have a dialogue exercise, as we’ve had a number of requests to revisit the topic- so our aim is to write the first draft of a ‘dialogue only’ story.

Writing Magazine also run a dialogue only story in the early part of the year, so come along to this week’s Read & Write night and try this style out. If it works for you, you’ll have the start of an entry for next year…

The members in-depth group is taking a short break until the autumn…

June Guest Speaker: Sam Maxfield…

Our guest speaker this month is Sam Maxfield, author of six novels including her latest, Must be Mapton, the third in her humorous Mapton-on-Sea series.

Taking a comical view of life as a writer, Sam will talk about her Mapton series; and then provide tips on how to cope with the ups and downs of a writer’s life- for aspiring dreamers to full-time writers.

Sam holds a BA in English and History and an MA in Creative Writing from Nottingham Trent University, and has lectured in English Literature; as well as the role of Education Officer at the Broadway Cinema, before becoming a full-time writer four years ago.

Sam will have copies of her books to sell and sign on the night, including her latest release Must be Mapton.

Find out more about our guest speaker on her website.

May Read & Write Night…

For our Read & Write night this month we’re focusing on backstory, including visual prompts to get everyone thinking and writing.

The aim of the writing session is to identify when the backstory ends and the story really starts…

Each writer can work at their own pace, whatever their level of ability.

There will also be time to read work out and get constructive comment.

If you’re interested in joining Nottingham Writers’ Club you can find out more from our Treasurer at any meeting or use our contact us form.

Going back to move forward…

Read & Write Night – Behind the Door…

Join us for our April Read & Write Night where our exercise topic and discussion is Description- Behind the Door.

Whether you are a prose, poetry or non-fiction writer description is an important part of your readers enjoyment and understanding; but too much description can be off-putting. So our exercise this session is to go big, then scale back.

The members in-depth group will also be taking place.

Behind the door…

* 2018/19 membership renewals, or applications for new members

can also be accepted at this meeting.

March Read & Write Night…

Join us for our March Read & Write night where we’ll be catching up on the writing exercise from February’s snow-hit meeting.

This month we have lines of dialogue for you to open your story with. Who is speaking and to whom is up to you…

If you prefer non-fiction use the opening lines to suggest possible article ideas…

Our members in-depth group will also be meeting.

As always there will be time to discuss writing issues that members and visitors may have with this month’s topic.

We start at 6.30 pm but you can arrive  (and leave) at the time that fits your evening, and transport schedule.

Clare is a former winner of the Romantic Novelists Association’s Joan Hessayon Award for New Writers.

We’re delighted to preview the format for our Saturday afternoon session.

Introduction:

Brief introduction from Clare, about herself and her books, and the aims of the afternoon. Followed by a short time for you to get to know the writers sharing your table.

Topics for the afternoon:

  • First scene; how to get your main characters together; and sex scenes. Each of these will include writing prompts as well as discussion.
  • Plot and Structure discussions that feedback to all attendees; moving on to editing and the publication process.

No one will have to read their work out, but discussion will be encouraged.

By the end of the afternoon you will have three pieces of writing that you can take home and continue to develop.

The final half hour is a Q&A, followed by the opportunity for you to purchase Clare’s books and get them personally signed.

Sorry, advanced booking is now closed.
But you can still pay on the day (until all places are filled).
