Saturday at The Playwright…

Our Saturday at the Playwright, meeting begins at 12.30 pm and goes on to 4.30, but we’re flexible with arrival and departure times.

For our March session, the voluntary homework is to write a piece of prose up to 800 words, or a poem- if that’s your preference. The theme is, Feud.

Arrive early to have time for dinner and chat, before we officially start at 1.30 pm hearing the stories and poems written on this month’s theme.

Then the rest of the meeting is flexible.  Our second Saturday meetings are informal, and non-members are welcome.

We’re building a writing community; so whether you’re a new writer, unpublished, or published, come and join us.

Any questions, get in touch via our contact form.

February- Saturday Session

Join us for our February, Saturday session in the poets corner room at The Playwright.

This month, the writing challenge theme is Botanical Gardens; a piece of prose up to 800 words, or a poem on the given subject. It’s not compulsory to do this to attend, so come along and hear the resulting works.

Arrive early (12.30), have lunch, chat, and get to know other in our writing community, and then from 1.30 onward it’s the challenge. Have a piece of writing you want to get comments on, or a writing question you want to talk about? Then there’s time for this in the remainder of the session.

Not only is this meeting flexible, but it’s free. We want writers to join in with our writing community, sharing the highs and lows, and experiences.

We’re a friendly group of writers, all of mixed abilities (from new to published) and a wide age range.

If you decide you’re interested in membership, then please get in touch via our contact form for up to date details (our website will shortly be having a big overhaul).

WEATHER: we are not expecting snow to effect the city centre on Saturday, but should that change we’ll put up messages on our Facebook page or tweet over on X.

November Saturday Meeting- Competitions

Our November second Saturday meeting is competition time.

Last year we revived our annual Verse of the Year, and Manuscript of the Year competitions. While only NWC members can enter, we welcome visitors to join in judging the winner.

This year’s theme is ‘Lost’ and it’s clear there will be a number of interpretations for this word.

We’re starting at our usual 12.30 pm to allow time for lunch and chat, before we begin the competition.

Prose writers have 250 words excluding the title and their pseudonym -it’s fun guessing who wrote which story. And for the verse it’s up to 20 lines excluding the title and pseudonym.

Attendees will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite Verse, and/or Prose entry. We’ll count out the votes and announce the top three in reverse order, for each category, and discover who penned them.

Members near and far, have had since mid- September to think about, and write their entry/entries.

This is always a fun event, and if you want to be entertained, challenged, and amused, then come along to The Playwright.

If you’d like to know more about NWC membership, please use our contact form to send us a message, and we’ll get back to you as son as we can.

Manuscript of the Year Competition…

Each November full members have the opportunity to enter the competition to win the  Manuscript of the Year Trophy.

Entrants are given a set theme in the Autumn issue of the club magazine ‘Scribe’, and members have 250 words to create a story.

This year’s theme is CLIMATE.

Writers enter their stories under a pseudonym, requesting either a male or female reader for their story.

After all the entries have been read twice, voting takes place.

The top three entries are announced (in reverse order) and the winning writers reveal their identity.

The winning writer holds the trophy from Awards Night in December around to November the following year.
